Pepastar

Paper comes alive

Pepastars are flexible construction pieces made of recycled paper which can revolve freely around their joints. The four different star-elements can be sticked together quickly to shape threedimensional objects. While children experiment with all kinds of creative techniques such as folding, glueing, cutting or painting the masterpiece transforms itself constantly. The interpretation of the outcoming forms stimulates new ideas and provides moments of surprise. Young paper engineers turn the Pepastars into fantasy sculptures, lively creatures and unique costumes, ready to be used in a role playing game.

The star-shaped paper elements are based on a simple two dimentional pattern. There are four different basic pieces which can be attached to one another at the pointed corners and rotated as required. As many as 6 pieces can be attached at the junction point. Thanks to the paper’s pliability, three dimensional shapes are quickly created.

The Pepastars have been developed as the final degree project of Bruno Carl Winter at the University of Fine Arts and Design Kassel, Germany. The basic idea was to design a plaything which would inspire imaginative and creative activities. Prior to this decision, he had intensively studied research findings into Play, Developmental Psychology and Educational Theory.

Winter tested the Pepastars with children and adults as to their suitability under practcal conditions and observed that the play activities developed their own lively dynamic progess. In rhythmic alternation, the test participants experimented, interpreted and put their findngs into concrete forms.

After further technical development the Pepastar-products are now being produced and distributed by Rotopolpress, an independent publisher for illustration works.

The Pepastar MiniSets are small and inexpensive try out kits containing a deer, an alligator or balls and dice to play with.
The Pepastar BigSet is all about experimentation, inventing and playing with one’s very own ideas. The 200 Pepastars in four sizes and five colours can be taken along everywhere with the origami wonder box that is easily built from the package. A booklet filled with ideas and tipps gives useful advice how to get started.
The Pepastar sets are suitable for children from the ages 6 upwards and of course for adults alike.

Pepastars are manufactured entirely in the city and surroundings of Kassel, Germany. The 100% recycled paper is composed mainly (>85%) from household collections of waste paper. The paper holds the certifiate "Blauer Engel" and is physiologically harmless.

Concept and design of the Pepastars have achieved recognition from the following institutions:

The 2009 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany - Nomination International Forum Design - iF Product Design Award 2008
Deutscher Designer Club - "gute gestaltung 08" DDC Bronze Award, category Future Mia Seeger Stiftung - Mia Seeger Award 2007, special recognition for the diploma work "Pepa - Ein Spiel mit Papier".

German Pepastar products hold a Greenpeace license to indicate a product, which is concerned a socially, environmentally and economically exemplary product by Greenpeace Media Germany.
